garmin“Garmin shares with the Global Ocean Race (GOR) not only our passion for the sea and sailing, but also the search for adventure, human challenge and the quest for unique experiences. All of us at Garmin are proud to include this collaboration within our sport sponsorship strategy,” said Salvador Alcover, Commercial and Marketing Director at Garmin Iberia, on the agreement for Garmin to sponsor the Global Ocean Race 2011-2012.

Garmin was invited by the GOR’s race director to not only sponsor product for this prestigious race, which takes place from September this year to May 2012, but also to host the official prize giving for the Cape Town stop-over.

It was also announced that Garmin has been selected as the official, and exclusive, supplier of marine navigation, marine communication and marine sensor equipment to the 34th America’s Cup.

In collaboration with the America’s Cup Event Authority, Garmin has developed tools that enable responsive management of the mark and marshal boats. These boats can now be tracked and dispatched in real time, and, if conditions permit, this technological addition will give officials the ability to change the racecourse faster than previously possible.

“We are honoured to have the opportunity to collaborate with the America’s Cup competition, bringing Garmin’s reputation for quality, commitment, performance and world-class support to the sailboat racing community,” said Mike Clarke, Garmin’s head of marine in South Africa.
