The Borland Financial Services Surfski Challenge got the 2012 Varsity College Marine Surfski Series underway on Friday evening with the vastly experienced Herman Chalupsky the first of the record field of over 350 surfski paddlers across the line in testing conditions. I jetted off to the USA last month, more specifically San Francisco, to race the US Surf Si Champs.It was my first trip to the States, and to say I was excited would be an understatement! The seriously long flight over there managed to dampen my enthusiasm, as well as being pulled over at customs for a rogue apple in my hand luggage! I am sitting in the Joburg airport about to fly out to Mauritius for the Island Shamaal with a very sore body. My back certainly knows I paddled 26km yesterday but through the stiffness I am quite stoked. The stoke doesn’t come from me heading off to an Island but rather from the race yesterday. I have a missed history with my home world cup with some races I would rather forget. I really wanted to do well at this one being on my door step. It’s late Friday evening with the Dunlop Durban Surfski World Cup Weekend about to kick off. Sitting up front during the media conference and briefing this morning at Marine was a privilege. Being a spokesperson for our sport to the media is a task I don’t take lightly and I hope I did it justice. I have been doing some homework using Garmin Connect on the 2 courses for this weekend’s Dunlop Durban Surfski World Cup. Over the last couple of weeks I have paddled both courses and for those doing the race here is some useful data to check out of the paddles I have done from the 2 courses.
