garminRobyn Hubbard - Assistant Trainer @ Fourways Adventure Boot Camp

Thanks to Garmin we were able to give our campers the opportunity to train with a Garmin heart rate monitor. They have heard us speaking about the monitors and the benefits for training. Two campers in particular were keen to try it out as they wanted to get their own.

Vivienne used it on a Tuesday for Arms and Abs. 510 calories were burnt, an average heart rate 130 and a maximum heart rate of 153 was reached. Her comments after the session were that it helped give purpose and measurability to the ABC session. It added a new dimension to the workout session and offered her the opportunity to challenge herself. She highly recommends it.

Shadnah enjoyed her session with the Garmin, she used it for a general body workout on a Thursday. 201 Calories were burnt, an average heart rate of 150 and a maximum heart rate of 176 was achieved. The distance covered was 3,47km in which her average cadence was 62 spm and a maximum cadence of 95 spm. She enjoyed the session with the Garmin as it still proves that she is working despite not being the 'runner' in the class. Shandnah is progressing well in terms of the cardio aspects of camp and works hard.

Both campers have since bought their own Garmin Devices and continue to enjoy the training and learning that goes hand in hand with it.

I was very excited to try out the new Garmin FR60 and so I eagerly unpacked it from its box to find out that I am completely technologically challenged. I found the device not quite user-friendly however after careful study of the manual I eventually found my way around the settings.

The FR60 is definitely easier to use than its big brothers the forerunner 310XT and forerunner 405, which 2 of my campers use daily at Adventure Boot Camp.  These devices look very impressive however you need a tech degree to work them! Once graduated it has amazing features similar to the baby FR60 that makes you come back for more. The ladies enjoy knowing what their heart rates are at a glance and obviously bragging about the amount of calories lost during the session, not to mention showing off to the couch potatoes at home how far they had run at camp that day.

Overall, exercising with a heart rate monitor is an absolute must for everyone and the Garmin FR60 is the most cost effective, entry level device currently on the market. You cannot go wrong when investing in your health and so getting a GARMIN is a must!
