juniorRemember the movie Cool Runnings? It was all about an aspiring bobsled team from Jamaica — the humour obviously in the irony that Jamaica is not really prone to snow.

This irony exists in real life South Africa too and there is nothing funny about the unbelievable achievements of 15-year old Luke Dutton.

Luke is not just a student at Kearsney College, he is also the South African snowboard champion, in both the men’s and junior men’s division!

In July 2011, he beat five-time champion Marcin Jekot to the title at the Quiksnow SA National Snowboarding championships at the Afriski Resort in Lesotho — a huge achievement for the youngster whose talent has taken him around the world already.

In December last year, Luke stayed in Bansko, Bulgaria with his family where he trained for a few weeks before joining Marcin Jekot in Rogla, Slovenia to train with top snowboard coach, Iztok Sumatic.

Six weeks of intensive training and Luke's ability on the slopes improved beyond belief. While in Rogla, Luke also competed in the Europa Cup, which gave him much needed big competition experience.

Luke’s passion is "Slopestyle" snowboarding, which involves difficult tricks off jumps. Slopestyle is set to become an Olympic event in the 2014 Winter Olympics to be held in Sochi, Russia, which is an exciting prospect for the youngster.

In lieu of the greatness that lies before this junior tribe member, we at the Mother Ship just want to say … you go guy! We’re behind you all the somersaulting way.
