Jimi Hendrix’s legacy lives on nearly half a century after his death, which is clear by his recent naming as “The Best Guitarist of All Time” by Rolling Stone magazine.

The star of Woodstock and the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performed in a number of bands during his lifetime, the most well known being The Jimi Hendrix Experience. He also pioneered the use of feedback and distortion in his music.

Following Hendrix on the list at number two is Eric Clapton, then Jimmy Page (Led Zepplin), Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) and Jeff Beck (R.E.M) — making up the top five guitarists, as chosen by a panel of experts. B. B. King, Chuck Berry, Eddie Van Halen, Duane Allman and Pete Townshend make up the top ten.
