neethlingMove over fragrances, personalised wines are the latest trend in celebville. Many an actor (Paul Newman), athlete (Ernie Els) and band (The Parlotones) have jumped on the wine barrel and slapped their name on a label, ready for consumption at every good time.

Unfortunately critics have often judged celeb wines as below-average blends, and a growing shadow of scepticism has emerged.

Nevertheless, South African Olympic gold medal winner, Ryk Neethling, has offically joined the ranks of ‘winemaker’ and the wine has spiked local interest.
The accomplished athlete developed a deep affiliation with Val De Vie – a stunning wine estate in Cape Town, where both his private property and swim school are situated. The historic land at Val de Vie, which began producing wine as far back as 1825, ignited Ryk’s passion for wine.

So when Martin Venter, the founder of Val de Vie, suggested they produce a wine together on a commercial scale, it was a dream come true for Ryk.
“I wanted to make a wine that I enjoyed drinking, and I think we have succeeded in doing that,” says the proud swimmer who was fully involved in the wine making experience. After completing a Garagiste course at The University of Stellenbosch, Ryk understood exactly what goes into making a great tasting wine, and was well-aware of the precision it takes to achieve the perfect balance and finesse. Ryk and Val de Vie’s winemaker Harold Versfeld spent hours meticulously tasting and mixing and matching until they reached a flawless blend that was Ryk’s perfect wine.

The Ryk Neethling is a medium to a full bodied blend that is fruit driven with subtle hints of sophistication and a whole lot of smooth elegance, fitting in perfectly with Val de Vie’s signature Rhône portfolio. The production of the Ryk Neethling wine was limited to only 3000 bottles, and has already been listed in 26 restaurants countrywide. Cheers to a celebrity winemaker that has made it work!
